No Place, Here
No Place, Here is a body of work that culminated in my senior show at Cooper Union in 2009. The project developed out of my interest in the way people described their experiences with art, particularly involving a pure encounter or transcendent event. I was interested in the things that supposedly obstruct such unadulterated encounters, that mediate the experience of looking—directions, history, information, the gallery, artist’s statements. By making these elements part of my work, I hoped to activate them and open up space for a different kind of encounter. What if the wall text in the museum was as startling and strange as the work it claimed to describe?
